Thorpe Marsh Power Station
Doncaster, South Yorkshire
Metals and Plant Ltd was asked to carry out the demolition, dismantling, asbestos removal, recycling of material and site clearance of a 50,000 ft2 redundant work unit at Thorpe Marsh Power Station Doncaster. The unit’s roof and the majority of the elevations were clad in asbestos sheeting which had to be carefully removed and legally disposed of, which amounted to approximately 90 tonne of galbestos chrysotile sheets. The unit’s skeleton structure was predominately made up of steel columns encased in concrete, with steel roof trusses and purlins. The latter were carefully dismantled and removed under contract lift conditions, then all columns processed and removed with the use of 360 excavators. This contract was particularly sensitive as bats had been highlighted as living in-between the external asbestos cladding and internal fibre board, with newts also residing on site around the external areas. Daily consultations with the conservation officer was needed, with specific areas of the works phased and checked accordingly to comply with all legislation and allow the works to be completed without incident and again prior to schedule.
